Clinical efficacy of topically applied vitamin C associated with madecassoside on skin aging

        Cutaneous aging is a complex biological process that affects the different compartments of the skin. In sun-exposed areas, skin aging is caused by two distinct processes: chronological aging and sun-induced actinic damage, called photoaging. We have previously demonstrated in vivo, the beneficial effect of topically applied vitamin C in the treatment of skin aging. Furthermore, madecassoside, extracted from Centella Asiatica, has been described as inducing collagen expression and/or modulating inflammatory mediators and thus might prevent and correct some signs of aging. A randomized double-blind study versus a commercial moisturizing cream was carried out on 20 female volunteers (45-60 years old) with photoaged facial and neck line skin, to investigate the effects of topically applied 5% vitamin C and 0.1% madecassoside, during 6 months, on the clinical and biophysical properties of aged skin. After 6 months of treatment, clinical evaluation of the facial skin (scoring by the dermatologist and self-assessment by volunteer) indicates a score improvement (versus the initial score) for deep wrinkles, superficial wrinkles, suppleness, firmness, roughness, and skin hydration. These results were comforted by the same evaluations performed on the two half neck line areas treated with either the association of vitamin C and madecassoside or with the commercial moisturizing cream. Our results revealed a significant greater efficacy of the emulsion containing vitamin C and madecassoside for the improvement of the skin firmness and elasticity and the reduction of the skin wrinkling (superficial and deep wrinkles), roughness, firmness, dehydration, and suppleness compared to the commercial moisturizing cream.
